Is your mobile site speed losing you customers?

Search behaviours are changing and over half of overall web traffic now comes from mobile. People have high expectations for mobile experiences and expect pages to load instantly, but unfortunately mobile sites do not always live up to this expectation.

To keep on top of consumer needs, businesses need to ensure their mobile sites are fast and relevant. No matter how great your site looks, if your mobile site speed is slow, there is a high chance users won’t stay.

1

Why is mobile site speed important?

On average, it takes 22 seconds to fully load a mobile landing page, yet according to Google, 53% of people expect a site to load in less than 2 seconds. The length of time it takes for your mobile site to load could be the difference between keeping customers on your site and losing them.

Mobile traffic is growing rapidly and customers now expect a fast, smooth mobile experience. For every second delay that it takes a mobile page to load, conversions can drop by as much as 20%.

2

Faster load times means more chances for engagement

When a site loads slowly users are more likely to abandon the page, therefore resulting in a loss in traffic. Creating a fast mobile experience keeps users engaged. The quicker the site, the more likely users will click through to more pages, engaging with content and ads.

Mobile site speed also draws a correlation between page views per session and session length. The less time users are spent waiting for a page to load means more time on site. The more time users spend on your site the more likely they are to consume your content and ultimately, convert into a lead.

To test your site speed Google have launched a new set of features on Test My Site, created to show:

  • Your site’s mobile speed
  • The number of visitors you may be losing.
  • How you compare to competition.
  • How to make your site faster.
