Always trying to keep up-to-date with the latest SEO and Social Media issues, I have many RSS feeds that I read daily, all with the latest and greatest ways to develop your SEO campaigns and more. However, occasionally these fountains of knowledge go back over the basics and rightly so. There are some huge companies out there that seem to fail when it comes to the basic ‘best practice’ of SEO and the article I read from Mark Thompson, (creator of the StayOnSearch blog,
@m_thompson) highlights some simple tasks that should be carried out for all websites. Below I have listed three of my top tasks to complete.
Setup Webmaster Tools
Being able to submit sitemaps, find error pages and resolve these issues are just some of the things that cannot be achieved by using an analytics tool. Submit your site with each of the search engine webmaster tools, (links to each can be found within the article) and have access to all this information, which if not dealt with, could have a negative effect to your site.
Install Analytics, Setup Your Goals
Analytics plays a huge role in SEO and by installing an analytics solution you will have a wealth of information to analyse. One of the most popular options is Google Analytics, mostly because it’s free, but it is very simple to install and use, allowing you to setup ‘goals’ to see how your site is performing. Tracking traffic to your site is obvious, but if you are also tracking time on site, average page views, as well as sign-ups, video plays etc you will be able to get a better picture of your sites performance.
Submit XML sitemap
Automation is great! By using an XML sitemap generation tool will allow for automatic crawling of your site which builds the XML sitemap that can be submitted to search engines. This can be updated via webmaster tools and will let your site be crawled faster due to the structure from the sitemap and let search engines find ALL the pages on your site easier. These are just some of the useful tips in
