Ads in Google's AI Mode Are Coming to the UK. Here's How to Get Ready

AI Mode is Google's conversational search experience. Instead of a list of links, people ask longer questions, get an AI-generated answer and keep the conversation going with follow-ups. Until now, UK advertisers have mostly watched it from a distance. That's about to change.

On 28 October 2026, Google announced that ads in AI Mode are expanding to ten more markets: Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. The UK, Brazil and Mexico are planned for the fourth quarter of 2026. In the US, Google is also starting to show ads within follow-up questions, so a sponsored result can appear several turns into a conversation, not just after the first search.

For UK brands running Google Ads, this isn't a new product to sign up for. It's a new place your existing campaigns will start to appear.

What's changing

  • Your campaigns are opted in automatically. Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns become eligible to serve in AI Mode. There's no separate setting to switch AI Mode on or off by itself.
  • Reporting is blended. AI Mode results are folded into your standard campaign reporting rather than shown as their own channel, and search terms from AI Mode appear only in aggregate.
  • Your existing controls still apply. Negative keywords, brand exclusions and asset pinning carry over, so they become your main levers over where and how your ads appear.
  • The searches look different. Google says AI Mode queries are, on average, three times longer than traditional searches (based on US data). People describe their situation, needs and constraints, not just a two-word keyword.

Why it matters

There's a real opportunity here. Someone asking AI Mode for the best waterproof walking boots for wide feet under £150 is telling Google far more about what they want than someone typing “walking boots”. Ads that meet that level of intent, with the right product, price and landing page, could perform very well.

But there are two catches.

The first is visibility. Because AI Mode performance sits inside your normal reports, you won't easily see how much you're spending there, which queries triggered your ads, or whether those clicks are new demand or customers you'd have reached anyway.

The second is quality. In a conversational answer, Google is matching your ads to a detailed brief. If your product feed is thin, your landing pages are vague or your conversion tracking is patchy, the system has less to work with, and you'll have less evidence to judge whether it's working.

More ad inventory doesn't automatically mean more profitable demand. Measurement has to lead adoption, not follow it.

What we'd do before it reaches the UK

  1. Record a baseline now. Note current performance for your Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns: cost per acquisition, return on ad spend, conversion rate, impression share and new-customer share. When AI Mode ads go live, you'll be able to spot shifts that blended reporting would otherwise hide.

  2. Get your product feed in shape. Complete titles, descriptions, attributes, images, pricing and availability give Google what it needs to match your products to long, specific questions. Gaps in the feed are gaps in eligibility.

  3. Check your landing pages answer real questions. If someone arrives from a detailed conversation, the page needs to confirm quickly that the product fits their need, with clear specs, sizing, compatibility and delivery information.

  4. Audit your conversion tracking. With less query-level detail available, accurate conversion data becomes even more important for both bidding and judging results.

  5. Review negative keywords and brand exclusions. They're the main controls you'll have over where your ads show in AI Mode, so make sure they reflect where you do and don't want to appear.

  6. Plan how you'll judge incrementality. Decide in advance how you'll tell whether AI Mode is bringing in new customers or simply moving existing demand around, whether that's through holdout tests, new-customer reporting or comparing trends against your baseline.

Paid and organic are converging

AI Mode isn't only a paid media story. The same AI answer that shows a sponsored result also draws on organic sources, product data, reviews and independent coverage to decide which brands to mention. Last week we looked at how AI Overviews now appear on 88% of commercial keywords. AI Mode ads are the paid side of the same shift.

That's why your product feed is now shared infrastructure across Shopping ads, organic search and AI answers, and why the brands that do best will treat them as one connected job rather than separate channels.

The bottom line

Ads in AI Mode will reach UK accounts automatically, probably before the end of the year. You can't opt out of it on its own, but you can make sure you're ready: clean data, strong landing pages, reliable tracking and a clear baseline to measure against. The brands that prepare now will be the ones able to tell whether it's working.
